Where Palace Bar sits
Come in from Soi Diana, pass Pocket Kings, and Palace Bar is the next counter on your left. Its neon sign is one of the first things you see inside the complex, and the bar faces The V Bar directly across the walkway. Everyone who walks to the stage passes between the two.
This is still the front of the complex. The stage is at the far end, so the band arrives here as a clear, steady sound rather than a wall of it. You can hear every song and still hold a conversation across the table.
What a night here is like
Palace Bar is where a lot of nights start. It is a social bar by position: people stop, sit, look around, and work out where to go next. Early on it is relaxed. By nine or ten the walkway in front of it is a river of people and the bar becomes a good place to sit and watch them.
On a Saturday in high season the whole front of the complex is busy and the tables here go quickly. On a Monday in September you can sit at the counter with the band as background and the courtyard half empty, which some people prefer.
Like every bar in the hall it is air-conditioned, and the front of the room is where the cold meets the street each time the door swings. Regulars call this the coolest place to drink in the area, and they mean the temperature.
Who it suits
Groups warming up. People who want to see the crowd rather than the stage. Anyone who likes the front of a room. If what you actually want is a properly poured pint of Guinness, there is one tap in the whole complex and it is at KQ Bar, the last bar on the right, beside the stage.
