Soi Buakhao Bars: What the Nightlife Area Is

Soi Buakhao is the long street through the middle of Pattaya where the beer bars, the restaurants and the expats are. It runs between South Pattaya Road and Central Pattaya Road, and the nightlife area people mean when they search for it is really a triangle: Soi Buakhao itself, LK Metro (the lane of bars that runs off it), and Soi Diana, where Las Vegas Beer Garden puts ten bars around one stage inside one air-conditioned hall, with a band Tuesday to Sunday and a DJ on Monday. Everything in that triangle is a few minutes' walk from everything else. No taxi, no Grab. Just legs.

That's the answer. What follows is what each part of the triangle is actually like, when to go, and where to sit down when the heat wins.

The Street Itself

Look, Soi Buakhao does not photograph well. It is a working street: motorbikes parked two deep, a 7-Eleven every couple of hundred metres, massage shops with the lights on, restaurants doing English breakfasts at four in the afternoon, and beer bars in between all of it. The smell is street food and exhaust and, somewhere, jasmine. The sound is traffic until about eight, and then the bars turn their speakers up and it becomes a street of competing playlists.

This is the point. Walking Street is a show. Soi Buakhao is where people who live in Pattaya drink.

The beer bars here are open-fronted counters with stools, a fan, a fridge and a TV showing whatever football is on. You sit, you get a cold bottle, the staff talk to you or they don't, and a night can go by that way. Some of them have been serving the same regulars for years. The good ones are the ones where nobody is trying to move you along.

By ten on a Friday, the street is full. By ten on a Tuesday in the rainy season, it is half empty and, honestly, better for it.

Tree Town

Tree Town is the cluster of bars and food stalls on Soi Buakhao that most first-timers stumble into. It sets up in the evening, it is loud and cheerful and open to the sky, and it is a good place to eat before the night starts. The music comes from a dozen small bars at once, which is fun for an hour and wearing for three. Treat it as the warm-up.

LK Metro

LK Metro is a short lane of bars running between Soi Buakhao and Soi Diana. It is compact and bright and it is where the go-go bars are in this part of town, alongside a few ordinary beer bars and a couple of places with a band. It is easy to find and easy to leave. It is also the shortcut: walk through it from Soi Buakhao and you come out on Soi Diana within a couple of minutes.

Soi Diana and Las Vegas Beer Garden

Soi Diana is the quieter of the three. A few hotels, a few restaurants, and one big hall you will hear before you see: Las Vegas Beer Garden, ten bars along one walkway with a stage at the far end, live band Tuesday–Sunday, 9 PM–1 AM, and a DJ on Monday.

Here is the thing about Las Vegas Beer Garden. It is not a bar. It is ten open-fronted bars inside one air-conditioned hall, arranged from the entrance to the stage, and where you sit changes the night completely. At the entrance, Pocket Kings and Palace Bar hear the band at conversation volume. In the middle, Full House and Viva have the bass coming up through the stools. At the back, Black Jack on the left and KQ Bar on the right are at the stage itself. Walk the whole length once before you sit down. It takes two minutes. Compared to Soi Buakhao, the difference is the band. A beer bar has a speaker. This has a drummer you can see counting in, a singer taking requests, and a whole courtyard leaning toward the same stage. If you came to Pattaya for a night out rather than a drink, this is the part of the triangle that delivers it.

The Problem with Every Open-Air Bar in Pattaya

It is hot. Not warm; hot. From March to May the air on Soi Buakhao at midnight is still in the thirties, and in the rainy season, from June to October, it is heavy enough to lean on. Every beer bar on the street, every stall in Tree Town and every bar in LK Metro is open to that air. A fan moves it around. It does not cool it.

One place in the whole triangle made a different choice. Las Vegas Beer Garden, whatever its name suggests, is an indoor hall, air-conditioned from the entrance to the stage, and it runs cold: reviewers call it the coolest place to drink in the area and the staff wear jackets. Walk in off Soi Diana and the cold hits your face like a wall. Once you are inside, the bar to know about is KQ Bar, the last on the right beside the stage, with the seats along the stage edge, the only Guinness tap in the complex, and staff who leave you to your night. That is the honest hand-off. Soi Buakhao for the street. Las Vegas Beer Garden when the heat wins, which in this town it eventually does. KQ Bar for the seat beside the band.

How a Night in the Triangle Goes

Six to eight. Eat on Soi Buakhao. The restaurants are better value than anything near the beach and you can watch the street fill up from a table on the pavement. Tree Town if you want noise with your food.

Eight to ten. A beer bar or two on the street. Sit, cool down, watch the football, talk to whoever is next to you. This is the part of the night the expats came for, and you will understand why by the second bottle.

Ten onward. Walk through LK Metro to Soi Diana. The band at Las Vegas Beer Garden is into its second set by now, the walkway is busy, and the back of the courtyard is loud in the way you wanted. Sit at Black Jack or Aces High if you want the band in front of you. Cross the walkway to KQ Bar when you want the Guinness or the seat beside the stage.

Late. Everything in the triangle runs until around three. Nobody needs a taxi home; the hotels are all inside the same few streets.

The Regulars' Rules

Bring cash. Most beer bars do not take cards, and the ATMs charge foreign cards a fee.

Walk before you sit. Every bar on the street looks the same from the pavement and they are not. The one with people in it at seven is usually the one with the regulars.

Monday is DJ night at Las Vegas Beer Garden. Tuesday to Sunday is the house band, and the nights to pick if you have one.

Order water. The heat is not a joke and neither is a Pattaya hangover.

If someone on the street is trying very hard to get you to sit down, the bar is not full. The bars that are full do not need to try.

Compared to the Alternatives

Walking Street is a spectacle, and worth an hour once, but it is loud, it costs more, and the staff are working you from the moment you step onto it. Soi 6 is a different kind of night entirely and not the one most people are asking about when they search for bars. Beach Road is pleasant before dark and thin after it.

Soi Buakhao, LK Metro and Soi Diana sit in the middle: busy enough to feel like a night out, relaxed enough to have a conversation, and close enough to each other that if the bar you picked is wrong, the right one is three minutes away. And when the heat wins, the air-conditioned hall is inside the triangle too.
